A Most Unsuitable Match

Dear Reader,

Could it be that one of the most eligible bachelors in England has been snared by an Irish upstart? Word has been received that Viscount B, a most staid young man, is wooing a young lady who is rumored to be the daughter of an Irish earl. One wonders what he can be thinking to pursue such an unsuitable match.

As no one in the ton knows much about the lady (if she truly is a lady) or her family, the Tattler’s intrepid reporters are looking into the matter. We have learned that the lady is quite on her own, impoverished, orphaned and lacking any family of influence. Worse, in these times of great unrest, there is some murkiness about the family’s loyalty to King and Country.

It must be mentioned that Lord B is an heir to Lord S, whose work for the Crown during our recent wars is whispered about. Surely the heir to such an estimable peer would not consort with one of England’s enemies?

Rest assured that your Teatime Tattler is pursuing this story.

The Viscount’s Seduction

Book Two, Sons of the Spy Lord

Searching for the Truth

Lady Sirena Hollister has lost her family, her home, and even her fey abilities, but somehow the fairies have handed her an unexpected chance at a Season in London. From her place on the fringes of high society, she resolves to find the truth about her only brother’s vanishing, and settle her family’s score with the wily English Spy Lord, the Earl of Shaldon. Soon enough, her schemes stir up an unknown enemy…and spark danger of a different sort, in the person of the Earl’s handsome heir, Viscount Bakeley.

Seducing the Beauty

The impertinent hoyden Bakeley met years earlier was as wild as her Irish roots, and just as unlucky. And she’s still an Irish traitor’s sister! But Lady Sirena has grown into a beauty whose charm and courage intrigue him. When danger threatens, Bakeley comes to her rescue, risking scandal, the ton’s disapproval, his interfering father’s ire…and his own heart.

Shocking Events in France and Mayfair

Dearest Readers:

You are no doubt aware that the stunning news of Bonaparte’s escape from Elba caps a week of utter chaos. Events of this week in Mayfair are beyond any I might have imagined in this most civilized and prosperous of countries. It is appalling that hordes of rioters have swamped the streets, broken into homes and vandalized belongings. I have heard various tales of mayhem and attacks on Members of Parliament from many of my well-placed correspondents, most of which have been reported elsewhere.

However, one fearless correspondent with first-hand knowledge informs me that these attacks weren’t limited to government officials. Dear Reader, you will find this story nowhere else!

On Thursday night past, a carriage was attacked on Arlington Street. The occupant was a lady on her way to a rout at Lady Camden’s. Her coachman and two liveried servants were unable to drive off the mob, and she was pulled from the carriage by ruffians. Fortunately, Horse Guard arrived in time to rescue her and, it was assumed, returned her home to safety.

Yet, later that evening, a curious thing happened. A Scottish Military Officer burst into the Arlington Street home of Lady Camden, seeking another Scotsman. The other man was not there, but our reporter had the distinct impression that the man being sought was Up to No Good.

But there is even more from our diligent correspondent, and I will share the story in that individual’s own words:

My dear Mr. Clemens,

Following my report of the Incident on Arlington Street and Lady Camden’s Scottish visitor, I have received further information.

The lady attacked by the crowd is newly arrived to town, residing with a relative in Chelsea, and not unrelated to the Scottish officer who visited Lady Camden. In fact, both the lady and the officer were players in a scandalous divorce from twenty years past, one so notorious that news of it (as it took place in the Highlands) reached even the London papers.

Further, I have learned that the attack on the lady was not a random act of the mob, but a targeted attempt at abduction! Nor was she safely returned to her home on Thursday last.

My source in Chelsea hints of a diabolical intrigue to this story. I will visit there later today and report further. Your readers will not want to miss this story!

Fated Hearts, A Love After All Retelling of the Scottish Play

About the Book

Plagued by hellish memories and rattling visions of battle to come, a Scottish Baron returning from two decades at war meets the daughter he denied was his, and the wife he divorced, and learns that everything he’d believed to be true was a lie. What he can’t deny is that she’s the only woman he’s ever loved. They’re not the young lovers they once were, but when passion flares, it burns more hotly than ever it did in their youth.

They soon discover, it wasn’t fate that drove them apart, but a jealous enemy who played on his youthful arrogance and her vulnerability. Now that old enemy has resurfaced, more treacherous than ever. When his lady falls into a trap, can he reach her in time to rescue this love that never died?

Reports of a Mesalliance

Dear Readers,

Ever committed to bringing you the most interesting tidbits of news, our correspondents have uncovered a tantalizing story of a possible mesalliance in one of the most formidable families of the kingdom.

In a past edition we wrote about a certain Lord S, his mistakenly reported death, and the discovery of an illegitimate son.  The last twelvemonth has brought unexpected marriages for Lord S’s heir and youngest son, but the most shocking of all is the latest news!

Several days ago Lord S was reportedly absent from important meetings and preparations for His Majesty’s coronation. Our diligent correspondents at first speculated that illness had overtaken the usually hearty earl, London being hot and overcrowded at this festive season.

But we were wrong! It seems that Lord S departed London quite suddenly for parts unknown, and his return reveals a quite shocking possibility.

Lord S returned in the company of his only daughter, Lady P (a most substantial heiress who has reportedly eschewed the offers of some of the ton’s most eligible gentlemen), and a Mr. F, in past years a portrait artist favored by some of the best families, but absent from town for the last several years.  Upon arrival, the young lady was bundled into the noble townhouse with her limping father, and a surgeon visited shortly thereafter. For what purpose, we were unable to determine.

Further inquiries revealed that Lord S was seen visiting Doctors’ Commons in the company of none other than Mr. F!  Lord S has reserved a morning a week hence at St. George’s Church, Hanover Square.

Dear Reader, is there a hasty wedding in Lady P’s future?

Far be it from this reporter to impugn the name of such a patrician family. Still, one must wonder…was the noble lady rescued or retrieved? And was Mr. F engaged for the wedding portrait—or is he the gentleman she is wedding?

Never fear, dear reader, we will report further on this.

The Counterfeit Lady

Freedom!

Vowing she’ll never submit to an arranged marriage, an earl’s daughter bolts for the remote seaside cottage that should be hers upon marriage.

But instead of a quiet respite from her controlling family, she finds her refuge occupied by the last man she ever wants to see again—an American artist, who’s also a thief.

And quite possibly one of her father’s spies.

This story includes a rebellious heroine, a determined spy, a meddling father, a vicious villain, a cast of free-thinking free-traders and possibly a ghost or two!

A Scandalous Widow Works her Wiles

Dear Reader,

The events of this Season have not disappointed! If you recall, the Teatime Tattler has previously reported on a young duke who caused a scene at Lady B’s recent ball.

Our latest news involves Lady B herself! The rumors of scandal touching her activities had quietened after Lord B’s death, but once again, the lady is stirring interest. Do read on:

Dear Mr. Clemens,

Just as the better families breathed a sigh of relief over the end of the sordid goings-on in one of the grandest homes in our generally respectable part of Hampshire, we are faced with more outrage.

Lady B, who disappeared for a time after the death of the earl (and a questionable death that was, even though our conscientious local magistrate did not wish to expose the area’s first family to further scandal) has reappeared at her late husband’s manor house, and this time in the company of the new Lord B!

You will know of course of the claims of a local marquess that the late earl changed his will to disinherit Lady B. Rumors abound that she somehow laid hands on and destroyed that new will.

The better families have tried to warn the new Lord B of her intrigues, but he is showing all the signs of having succumbed to her wiles. In fact, he is even claiming that whatever happens regarding her inheritance, she will continue to be under his protection.

The brazenness is confounding. I shall write again with more news soon.

Your faithful correspondent,

Mrs. J.

Her Impeccable Scoundrel

Anxious to save a cherished inheritance, Blythe Blatchfield, Countess of Chilcombe, knows she must repair her reputation with the Beau Monde in order to face the powerful marquess challenging her dissolute husband’s will. She vows to resist handsome rogues like her late husband, and to never again give her trust so blithely. But when the new earl, absent from England for many years, finally appears, new rumors swirl around Blythe. Facing the loss of everything, she finds herself needing the help of an old enemy, the man whose interference years earlier led to her unhappy marriage, the new Earl of Chilcombe.

Reluctantly returning to England from important duties abroad, diplomat Graeme Blatchfield has one bright hope: a chance to meet his late cousin’s widow again, to see if the rumors about the woman he once held a childish infatuation for are true. Having plunged into marriage with the last earl—Graeme’s fault for revealing their tryst in a vain attempt to rescue her—she’s been tainted by her husband’s decadent reputation. Rumors swirl in the men’s clubs about the new widow. Rumors that may or may not be true. Forced by matters of the estate to spend time together, he soon discovers the vulnerable and lonely woman underneath the society mask. Can he get her to forgive him—and more?

Will the Scandalous Countess be Evicted?

Dear Readers,

I’ve received the following report from one of my regular correspondents. What will the aristocracy get up to next?

Dear Mr. Clemens,

You will be well aware of the reappearance in town of the Earl of C’s scandalous widow, Lady C. The goings-on at the C’s country estate have been the talk of the town for years. Her disappearance for the last year has whetted all of our appetites for news, and I have made a special point of calling on her. For the good of society, you understand; Lady C was an upstart who trapped the late earl into marriage.

It is well known that upon her husband’s death, Lady C was left with very little, and even that might be a matter of the lady foisting a fraudulent will upon the court. The esteemed Lord D has filed a counterclaim, alleging that Lord C executed a new will shortly before his death, a new will that has disappeared.

That counterclaim hasn’t stopped the widow from living in Lord C’s homes and spending whatever money she can lay hands on while the heir’s return is delayed. Or, I should write, was delayed. For as it happens, I was privileged to be present when the late earl’s cousin walked through the door of Lady C’s drawing room. What surprise on his face! What consternation on hers!

I shall be certain to write again with more news soon.
