Our intrepid reporter informs us that a young French lady, who recently escaped the guillotine and now lives in Sussex, was caught signaling to smugglers. She was about to be dragged to the lockup by the excisemen when a well-known young nobleman suddenly claimed her as his affianced wife.
Scandalous indeed, but it can be difficult and dangerous to gainsay a nobleman (who, we assume, was in the grasp of foolish lust). However, there’s worse: for the lady was overheard to say she doesn’t want to marry the nobleman at all!
Why, you ask? We don’t know the answer. But what we do know is that a French spy is working on the Sussex coast, sending information to France via the smugglers—the selfsame smuggling gang to which the young lady belongs.
