What will the lady do?

Lady Prudence Danvers paced the floor of the study, biting her lip in apprehension that the small tidbit of gossip might not be up to par for Samuel Clemons and his notorious Teatime Tattler newspaper.

“Read it to me again, Abigail,” Prudence urged her sister who quietly put down her pencil.

“This will be the fourth time, Prue. If I make any more corrections, I’ll run out of paper and we can hardly afford the cost until we are paid by Clemons,” Abigail scolded.

“But does it sound…” she bit her lip before falling down onto a nearby chair by the hearth… “I don’t know… too harsh?”

Abigail gave a short laugh of disdain. “When has that ever stopped us when the end result will see us well paid?”

“Just read it,” Prudence said leaning her head back on the chair to stare at the ceiling.

“Very well, but this is the last time.” Abigail took a deep breath and began to read:

Dear Esteemed Readers:

The Season is once again in full swing but this bit of tittle tattle is too good to wait for next week’s edition. News has reached me that a certain Duke of S is apparently on the market for a wife since he accompanied a stunning brunette to a recent ball, all but snubbing his  ex-fiancé who was also in attendance. We all know Lady A was betrothed to the duke since their parents arranged their marriage at a young age and yet their arrangement is clearly at an end! If what has been reported to me is correct—and you know I only run the most reliable information in the Teatime Tattler—then Lady A will be considered on the shelf and no other man in his right mind will make an offer for her hand now that the duke has rejected her. Such a shame, since she was always considered perfect wife material. I’m sure the Season will continue to be interesting as the duke and the lady continue to ignore each other. You’ll be the first to know when we learn more on what the lady will do next.

“Well?” Abigail asked with a raised brow. “Will it do?”

“Do you think he’ll make changes to it?” Prudence asked, worried that this wasn’t up to their usual standards. “I mean it’s been a while since we’ve offered the editor anything of worth.”

“Samuel Clemons can make any changes he wishes and you know he will. Honestly, what’s gotten into you today? You’re not usually this concerned with what we report,” Abigail huffed in annoyance.

“Maybe we’ve gone too far this time,” Prudence whispered. “Lady Annette has been nothing but kind to us.”

“And she’ll never know we are the ones who offered this piece of gossip to Clemons.” Abigail stood and went to take her sister’s hands. “We’ve been over this before and although I am usually the voice of reason, this time I think we’ll fetch a fine bit of coin for this piece. This involves a duke, after all.”

Prudence shook her head in agreement. “You’re right, of course. Send it off and let’s be done with it until the next time we have something interesting to report.”

This is an original piece by Belle Sherry Ewing regarding her story Waiting for the Duke in the boxset Sizzling Duke Summer. Read on for a short excerpt and to learn more about her contribution and the set.

Excerpt:

John stood at the entryway and saw the lady pulling at the dark drapery to sneak a peek out the window. Having only just been outside to see his father being buried, he knew the day was sunny and that, under normal circumstances, the bright sunlight would have filled this room, making it feel bright and airy. It had been his mother’s favorite room in the manor, and it was a shame that everything had now been covered to observe mourning traditions. The lady would have made a beautiful picture standing there with the sun shining upon her red hair, now covered in a black veil.

He must have made a sound, for Annette turned from the window, offering him a lovely smile that didn’t quite reach her hazel eyes. She had been crying most likely as much as Clara had been because she had also been fond of their father.

“John,” she whispered softly, coming over and taking his hands as she had done a thousand times in their past. She must have realized her mistake because she quickly sank down into a proper curtsey after letting go of his hands. “I mean, Your Grace. I am so sorry for your loss.”

“You are one of the few people who have called me by my given name. You may continue to do so,” he murmured as he ran his hand over the back of his neck. A sudden sense of dread about what he was about to do caused a moment of doubt to race across his mind.

“I’m not sure my brother would approve, given your new elevation in life,” she answered honestly.

“Brothers never do,” he said with a slight smile.

“I really am very sorry for your loss, Your… John.”

“My father’s passing is also your loss, Annette,” he said quietly. “I know how much he meant to you.”

“He was like a second father to me,” she confessed. “With both of our parents now gone from this world, it seems the four of us are all we have now.”

“Is your brother still here?” he asked wondering if the earl would be joining them.

She shook her head. “Edward went to see that our carriage was brought around. He thought it best to give you and Clara some time alone now that the services were over and your guests have left.”

“Perhaps we could have a moment for a private word together before his return,” he said, feeling the weight of the draft hidden inside his jacket.

“Of course, John. If there’s anything I can do to ease your mourning, all you have to do is ask,” she said with another one of those smiles that always seemed to brighten any room. Why was he only just now noticing how truly lovely she was?

He nodded before taking her hand and placing it in the crook of his arm and escorted her over to a settee. Once she was seated, he again had second doubts on what he was about to do, thinking now might not be the best time to set things straight between them. But he didn’t want to marry anyone right now, let alone the lady who gazed at him with such affection. God, he hated to break her heart.

Waiting for the Duke
By Sherry Ewing

When you’ve been rejected, can love find its way back into your heart?

Lady Annette Saxton has known since childhood that she was betrothed to a future duke. John Fawsley is everything any woman would ever want in a husband, but maybe she has only seen what she wanted to see all these years. He seems uninterested in what their parents had prearranged, and Annette worries her future with him might not be secure.

John Fawsley, Duke of Sommer, had always known that someday the dukedom would be his, but he never expected to wear the title so soon. He doesn’t feel ready. Certainly, he doesn’t feel ready to marry! And though he’s always thought Annette was an attractive young lady, she feels like more of his sister’s best friend than a potential wife. Better to cut her loose while he learns the role of the Duke of Sommer, and give her the freedom to marry a more settled man of her own choosing.

Two years later, John’s sister Clara, and Annette’s best friend, arranges a house party in order to put the pair together. Annette remains hopeful that their relationship can be restored while John still wishes to define his life by his own choices. He does not expect jealousy to play a part in Clara’s plan.

Can the differences of two stubborn people be put aside so they can find their way back into each other’s lives?

There’s a New Lyon in the House!

Dearest Gentle Reader:

It has come to this reporter’s attention that there might just be a new Lyon’s Den member who might be in search of a wife! Rumor has it that Mrs. Dove-Lyon is currently making a small fortune, not from her gambling establishment, but her side hustle as Society’s matchmaker.

Yes, dearest Reader, you read that correctly. For a substantial fee and with the right connections, the Black Widow of Whitehall will most certainly find a suitable match for even the most questionable of reputations, not that Captain Gideon Tyler isn’t a man of wealth. But as a second son of the late earl, he might have a harder time finding a match with a woman who can overlook his scar received during the war.

Still… he’s been seen recently at the Lyon’s Den tables with more frequency and, given his losing streak, he might find himself in debt to the Black Widow of Whitehall. We all know what is sure to happen after that.

Stay tuned to your reliable Teatime Tattler for more news on who just might capture Captain Tyler’s eye.

Belle Sherry Ewing shares this little tidbit on her latest release, No Ordinary Lyon: Lyon Den Connected World. Read on to learn more about this exciting Regency novel.

The gossip we learn when we travel…

Prudence and Abigail Danvers glided down the stairs of the Book & Bell Inn and entered the dining area looking for a place to sit. The place was crowded for this evening but luckily, they were able to find an empty table. A young woman of perhaps four and twenty years with blonde hair and blue eyes, came to take their order for their dinner. Soon, a soothing pot of tea was placed before them. It was welcome after their travels.

“Whatever are we doing here of all places, sister? You know how I detest the country,” Prudence complained to her sibling and glanced about the room.

Abigail patted her hair, not that even a strand was out of place. “You know how much I love the Harvest Festival they have here every year. Besides, we just might find a new piece of juicy gossip to send Mr. Clemens.”

“Do you not grow tired of writing for the Teatime Tattler? Once of these days, we shall be the topic of gossip and then what will you think of that paper,” Prudence huffed looking around the room.

“Samuel Clemens pays well for the gossip we supply. We are hardly the only reporters who provide fodder for his rag.” Abigail took a sip of her tea until the door to the inn opened. Two handsome gentlemen entered along with a young boy. They went to one of the booths near the back of the room. “This place just became a little more interesting.”

Several minutes later, the door to the inn opened again. This time the man entering drew the attention of both sisters. Black hair in need of a trim and amber eyes that would cause any lady to swoon swept the room until they found his companions. His limp as he began making his way toward the table was unmistakable.

“Is that not―” Prudence began with wide eyes.

“Yes. I think it is. I wonder where he has been for all these years,” Abigail said with a wicked grin.

A man came from the kitchen and welcomed his newest guest, and it was clear Lord Brandon Worthington was known in these parts. But when the same lady who had recently served their table took hold of Lord Brandon’s ale and dumped it over his head, Abigail’s squeals of delight were muffled by the gasps that echoed in the room from the other diners.

Prudence reached over and took hold of her sister’s arm. “Abigail… no,” she warned.

Abigail’s eyes twinkled mischievously. “Oh, Prudence, do not be such a ninny! This is just what the Teatime Tattler needs in their next edition, and you know it.”

The sisters would write their note to Mr. Clemens once they had finished their dinner knowing a few coins would once again be lining their reticules. It was always amazing what sort of gossip you could find when you traveled!

********************************

This is an original piece by Bluestocking Belle Sherry Ewing. Lord Brandon Worthington and Miss Hannah Pownell are the current characters in A Love Beyond Time: A Family of Worth, Book Three. This novella is Sherry’s contribution to the Belles’ latest boxset Under the Harvest Moon. Abigail and Prudence Danvers are Sherry’s revolving characters that write and report gossip for the Teatime Tattler. Perhaps one day, they’ll get a story of their own. Read on for an excerpt from Sherry’s novella and to learn more about the boxset.

Excerpt:

Hannah stared out across the pond and beyond to the field of dying flowers. She hugged her shawl around her shoulders for comfort. It had taken her four days to come to terms with Brandon Worthington’s return to the area. Four days of crying. Four days of suppressed anger from all the hurt that rose to the surface at one glimpse of him. Four days of listening to bits and pieces of gossip of his war service and subsequent injury when the locals came to dine at the inn. She hadn’t hung around long enough after she dumped his ale over his head to see him limping for herself, but someone always seemed to be talking about Captain Brandon Worthington’s return.

Hannah sighed. Four days… Such a small amount of time considering he had kept her waiting six long years for him to come back to her. She could hardly say he had actually come back to her! She closed her eyes remembering how she had cherished the letters he had sent the first two years after he left. She had read them so many times, that she had memorized each and every word. And then…nothing. No word. No more letters. Just silence. After six additional years of waiting, she had given up hope. After all, how long was she supposed to wait for a man’s return?

After she had dumped his drink over his head, she refused to apologize to the man despite her parent’s anger that she had treated a guest in such a manner. He deserved it and more! She supposed her sudden actions had been immature and childish but at the time her behavior had seemed appropriate. But even when Brandon sent a note asking for her to meet with him, she had refused to answer his message or give him the satisfaction of knowing she been pining away for him all these years.

So, what was she doing waiting for him to show up in their spot? He hadn’t sent another message for her to meet him here, after all. She just assumed the man would show up and maybe this was the crux of her problem. She had missed him terribly and no other man, including Randall or Gilbert, had held even an ounce of her affection since the day Brandon Worthington left Reabridge. Her love had been wasted on a man who hadn’t even given her any sort of an explanation as to his long absence. Yet here she was… waiting for him on the off chance he would know her well enough to realize she would be here… waiting… The anticipation was going to kill her!

Hannah was just about to forget this whole foolish idea when the sound of carriage wheels on the gravel road reached her ears. They came to a halt a few moments later and soon the sound of someone’s uneven gait walking across the small wooden bridge announced his arrival. Squaring her shoulders, she took a deep breath to calm her already frayed nerves before she turned.

Bluestocking Belle Sherry Ewing’s next release is entitled To Claim A Lyon’s Heart which is part of the Lyon’s Den Connected World. She, along with Belle Jude Knight, coordinated several scenes between their characters so Vincent and Moriah may look familiar if you’ve read her story The Talons of a Lyon. Read on for an excerpt from Sherry’s story.

Excerpt:

She found herself on the gallery looking over the gentlemen who were already deep into their cups and placing their wagers. Soft music from a harp and violin came from the far end of the room filled with candlelight. Most of the tables were filled with eager men ready to place their bets.

Cassandra leaned over to whisper in Moriah’s ear. “The table hosts, or dealers, are all men who are attracted to other men…”

“Interesting…” Moriah replied.

“And all have made-up names from Mrs. Dove-Lyon’s favorite play, A Midsummer’s Night Dream. This includes the bouncers and dealers.”

Moriah burst out laughing. “Surely you’re joking.”

“You’ll learn the ins and outs of the place quickly, depending on how long Mrs. Dove-Lyon takes to find the perfect man for you.”

“Do you think he’s really here, Cassie?” Moriah asked, almost holding her breath as her gaze swept the room. Her eyes traveled to one gentleman, and she almost dropped the wine glass she held in her hand. Moriah could hardly mistake the man who had watched her from a window of a neighboring house today. With the glaring sun, she highly doubted he had seen her clearly, but she certainly saw enough of him to know he had been utterly handsome.

His head bent forward as he perused his cards. A lock of his dark black hair fell rakishly over his forehead, giving Moriah the sudden urge to push back those silken locks from his face. From this distance, she couldn’t tell, but she thought his eyes might be blue. He appeared perhaps a year or two older than her own one and thirty years of age. Long fingers held his cards close to the table edge, causing Moriah to wonder how his palms and fingertips would feel caressing her skin.

Her face flushed at the thought and Moriah moved back from the railing of the gallery. She wanted to hide behind the curtain, too, but that would only make her distress more obvious. Good heavens…had it really been that long since she had a man in her bed that a perfect stranger could elicit such sudden urges in her body? She stole another glance at him, and when her heart flipped end over end, she realized that it had indeed been that long.

Scandal among Duchesses

Dearest Readers,

The Tattler has received the most shocking news about two of society’s newest Duchesses. Everyone recalls the scandals that nearly brought down the Duchess of Stonegreave before her marriage to heroic Captain Richard Campion. Now it seems that Her Grace of Stongreave is not the only duchess with a murky past.

We have recently learned that Viscountess Cairndow may not be an ideal candidate for Duchess of Cowal. Despite her recent nuptials with Cairndow, Cowal’s heir, rumors continue to swirl that her ladyship was a base-born commoner raised by an Irish pirate. When that dubious parent passed away, our sources claim that the former Esmeralda Crobbin took over as captain of his ship. She would have been a solitary female, alone at sea with a crew of close to 100 men. No woman in such circumstances could lay any claim to virtue or honesty. Given the naïve innocent recently presented to society as Viscount Cairndow’s supposedly beloved bride, it is nearly beyond belief that the Viscountess’s rumored past is true.

Yet stranger things have happened.

Take, for example, Lady Cairndow’s reported finishing school compatriot, the former Miss Celestine St. Cyr-Duval, who is now Duchess of Margris.

The Duke of Margris recently shocked society when he returned to London after an absence of several months with an American Bride. And not just any bride, Her Grace is reported to be the natural child of a decades long union between a Louisiana sugar magnate and a mulatress who resided in St. Domingue until the revolutions there in last years of the previous century. Eventually this woman made her way to New Orleans. Her daughter by that same sugar magnate, born in St. Domingue and convent schooled in Jamaica, is now Duchess of Margris. Natural children of relationships such as that between Her Grace of Margris’s mother and the planter are not unusual. Several respected members of the ton have similar origins.

What is unusual, even scandalous, is our newest duchess’s reported activities in Louisiana before her marriage. Our most reliable sources state that Her Grace was personally involved in aiding in the escape of a dozen or more slaves. A noble effort, we are certain. However, the lady was only able to bring about these escapes because of her friendships with a number of pirates. One of them was the aforementioned Esmeralda Crobbin, a friendship formed at the convent school. Another was the pirate Lucien Flynn, whose flagrant affairs with a number of women have been reported widely in the London press.

Flynn, a romantic figure of dubious character, is rumored to have some connection with Margris’s family. Our source was unable to confirm any connection at the time of this report. But if such a relationship were true, is it possible that the gentlemen shared the current Duchess of Margris’s favors before whatever events might have forced a wedding with the duke? Only Margris’s pristine reputation stands as denial to such a rumor. His Grace is known to never have indulged in any affair in the ton or the demi-monde. He has throughout his life been tireless in his support and defense of Britain and the Crown. Only the Haverford family rivals Margris’s charitable efforts. And he and His Grace of Haverford have successfully sponsored several legislative reforms. Our country is a better place because of such men.

How is it possible that men of such good repute as Cowal’s heir and Margris wed so far beneath them? About Rue Allyn: Author of historical and contemporary romances, Rue Allyn fell in love with happily ever after the day she heard her first story. (She claims she was a precocious little brat who read at the age of two but could hear much earlier than that.) She studied literature for far too many years before discovering that writing stories was much more fun than writing about them. One of her greatest pleasures as an author is being able to read the story before anyone else. Rue is happily married to her sweetheart of many, many years. Insatiably curious, an avid reader and traveler, she loves to hear from readers about their favorite books and real-life adventures. Crazy Cat stories are especially welcome. You can contact her at Rue@RueAllyn.com. She can’t wait to hear from you.
