What is happening to our fine neighborhood?

Dear Mr. Clemens,

A recent article in the Munro Times revealed that Miss Irene Sangford had had a nasty fall from her horse in Munro Park. The young woman is a fine rider, and it surprised this reader that she would be so easily unseated.

A subsequent article added the most horrific details. One could scarce believe our grand park would be the scene of such a disturbing event. According to a witness, Miss Sangford and her sister were riding at the fashionable hour when a man jumped out in front of them, wielding a knife! If it were not for the timely presence of Mr. Nathaniel Macrae, who chased the villain away, who knows what terrible consequences might have befallen the young ladies? The groom who accompanied them would certainly not have been armed. How would he have defended his master’s precious daughters?

Poor Miss Amelia fainted with fear. She might not have been injured like her sister, but the ordeal would have been no less terrifying for her. And yet, neither of the Misses Sangford have spoken of it or sought pity from others. It is a degree of modesty one can but admire.

And to think that the miscreant is still out there! It is small wonder we have seen so few ladies out riding in Munro Park since the news has been made known. It is a shame that our city’s most beautiful public park must be avoided for the safety of our more delicate citizens. We can only hope that the villain is soon caught.

Appalled,

A longstanding resident of Munro

Pride comes before her fall. Love helps her stand again.

Irene Sangford has willingly cast herself as the villain of her own story. After all, her family has taught her that arrogance and manipulation are suitable qualities in a lady if she’s seeking a husband with a title. Especially when there are so few such men to be had, and she is competing with her own sister to snap one of them up.

Nathaniel Macrae not only has no title, he has immersed himself in low society in his role as a secret investigator. Miss Sangford would never have given him a second glance, but when an attempted murder leads his inquiries right to her door, and a shocking secret from her past threatens to unravel her entire life, Irene discovers that Mr. Macrae is more compelling than any man she has ever met.

As Irene’s world falls apart, and she questions everything she has ever known, Nathaniel becomes her anchor in life’s greatest storm. Except this storm threatens to destroy them both. They will have to challenge everything they know and trust each other if they are to survive and find the love that has eluded them.

A Fashionable Tulip Enters the Lists

Dear Readers,

I hope you are ready for another romantic tidbit!

Dear Mr. Clemens,
The season’s Incomparable has made yet another conquest!
Mr. H, the fashionable Tulip, has recently entered the lists for the most sought-after maiden’s hand but, not content with merely dancing and driving with the divine young lady, has gone so far as to enlist the aid of a friend’s mother and sister in instructing him in the delicate art of romance.
Indeed, Mr. H, always impeccably turned out in the latest mode, has been known to visit his preceptresses almost oftener than he has been driving the Incomparable—which may lead one to suspect his motives in that house. Ought his friend—who is rumored to be something of a watch-dog—to be concerned? For rumor has it that Mr. H, in the past, has not been altogether indifferent to the rather pretty sister.

Three New Grand Sponsors for The Teatime Tattler

“Mr Clemens, Mr Clemens,” gasped Joseph Spratt, the newest and keenest of the newshounds who worked for The Teatime Tattler. “Breaking news, sir! The Bluestocking Belles have three new members.”

Sam smiled benignly. The boy was good. But nowhere near as good as Sam. Without a word, he waved towards the galley proofs spread across the large table. Joe read the headline. “Three New Grand Sponsors The Teatime Tattler”. “Oh!” said Joe. “You knew, sir.”

“I did indeed,” said Sam, who had written the article in question. The Bluestocking Belles had founded The Teatime Tattler, and had been supporting it for ten years. Of course Sam, the editor and proprietor, heard about changes in their membership before the news was released to the public.

Sam was sorry to farewell Lady Elizabeth Ellen Carter, whose stories about spies and corsairs had provided some wonderful copy. But he looked forward to hearing more about the new ladies.

Ten Bluestocking Belles sending him gossip, scandal, and intrigue to publish every Saturday! Sam rubbed his hands together in glee.

Speculation Rampant Over the Duke of Margris’ Return

Dateline, March 1815

Dear Readers,

We are delighted to report that His Grace, the Duke of Margris has returned to our shores. The duke is highly respected. So much so that you can imagine our astonishment at the rather dubious persons he brought with him.

Margris had been dispatched to the port of New Orleans in October of 1814 for the purpose of gaining a cease fire between the colonial army of Mr. Andrew Jackson and the British troops assigned to take possession of the port under the leadership of the late Major General Sir Edward Pakenham. Had Margris succeeded in his mission the Major General might still be with us as he lost his life in a battle over New Orleans

Why, Margis failed to gain the ceasefire will never be known. We might speculate that he suffered no small degree of distraction. First when he learned that his younger brother—that ne’er do well—Lucien Flynn was playing the pirate on behalf of Britain’s enemies.

Even more distracting must have been the young miss—one could hardly call her a lady—with whom the duke dallied. What is most disturbing is not that she is an American, as they like to call themselves, but rather an American Creole. The creole designation indicates that her lineage is mixed, probably among the French, Spanish, and Americans who have long inhabited New Orleans. It is possible, though we cannot say with certainty that she may have ancestors amongst the rebellious Hattian slaves who fled Haiti rather than submit again to French rule.

Regardless of her parentage, the duke’s new wife is said to have been well chaperoned while Margris was courting. That may even be true. After some weeks, he married the lady (one must give a Duchess credit as a lady) and has brought both his bride and his brother back to England.

A Drawing of Lucien Flynn

We, like the ton, are agog with curiosity and await with great expectation the debut of Her Grace, the Duchess of Margris. As for Margris brother, The crown has seen fit to pardon him for any crimes and restore his ancestral property in Ireland. Perhaps the crown did so because he too has wed an American, but a woman of no family. ‘Tis well that he has retired with his bride to the Irish estate. I doubt he or the woman would be well received despite the crown’s forbearance.

We promise to keep you well-informed the moment we learn more of Margris and his relatives.

About the books: His Grace Caleb Margris’ story is told in The Creole Duchess and is where we first meet his half brother, Lucien Flynn. Lucien’s story is told in Cursed: A Corsair’s Tale, which is available now on pre-order at a discounted price. The Creole Duchess is available now. Here are the descriptions and buy links.

A Caution to Diligent Parents

Dear Readers,

We at The Teatime Tattler have recently received this letter with advice for parents:

Though your hours are drawn out in ceaseless anxiety for the welfare of your children, and the purpose of your every action be to see them placed in the happiest and most respectable situation, do not think to find them grateful! No! It is best to be taught by lessons learnt by other unfortunate parents, who have been foiled in every worthy attempt to settle their children according to their rights and stations.
Only this week, at a house party given by an eminently respectable matron, and gathering several titled and eligible gentlemen for the perusal of the many daughters of nobility attending, one young lady was rumored to have been desired by her mother to endeavor to captivate the recently widowed duke. But Miss S not only ignored this most reasonable and prudent wish but went so far as to seek out the companionship of the house librarian instead! As another rumor has it that the young lady was in possession of a mouse figurine that could grant wishes, one can only presume she is touched in the head, which may have played a role in her perverse desire to thwart her mama’s designs.
But even less comprehensible is a certain Lord G’s ingratitude in failing to make efforts effectual enough to attach one of the many eligible young ladies his unwearied mother has thrown in his way over the past four years. As his lordship is neither young nor addle-brained, the only excuse for his undutiful behavior must be ingratitude–though a close source claims he carries the willow for a lady still single, and still residing in the neighborhood. But even should this prove the case, one cannot conceive of what he is about to throw all his mother’s careful schemes to the wind when this mysterious lady has already once refused him.
These examples must give any fond parent pause before setting out to construct a child’s future. Wisdom and experience ought to prevail, but when Love is allowed a say, one may very well be set for disappointment in one’s child’s ultimate choice.
