Reports of a Mesalliance

Dear Readers,

Ever committed to bringing you the most interesting tidbits of news, our correspondents have uncovered a tantalizing story of a possible mesalliance in one of the most formidable families of the kingdom.

In a past edition we wrote about a certain Lord S, his mistakenly reported death, and the discovery of an illegitimate son.  The last twelvemonth has brought unexpected marriages for Lord S’s heir and youngest son, but the most shocking of all is the latest news!

Several days ago Lord S was reportedly absent from important meetings and preparations for His Majesty’s coronation. Our diligent correspondents at first speculated that illness had overtaken the usually hearty earl, London being hot and overcrowded at this festive season.

But we were wrong! It seems that Lord S departed London quite suddenly for parts unknown, and his return reveals a quite shocking possibility.

Lord S returned in the company of his only daughter, Lady P (a most substantial heiress who has reportedly eschewed the offers of some of the ton’s most eligible gentlemen), and a Mr. F, in past years a portrait artist favored by some of the best families, but absent from town for the last several years.  Upon arrival, the young lady was bundled into the noble townhouse with her limping father, and a surgeon visited shortly thereafter. For what purpose, we were unable to determine.

Further inquiries revealed that Lord S was seen visiting Doctors’ Commons in the company of none other than Mr. F!  Lord S has reserved a morning a week hence at St. George’s Church, Hanover Square.

Dear Reader, is there a hasty wedding in Lady P’s future?

Far be it from this reporter to impugn the name of such a patrician family. Still, one must wonder…was the noble lady rescued or retrieved? And was Mr. F engaged for the wedding portrait—or is he the gentleman she is wedding?

Never fear, dear reader, we will report further on this.

The Counterfeit Lady

Freedom!

Vowing she’ll never submit to an arranged marriage, an earl’s daughter bolts for the remote seaside cottage that should be hers upon marriage.

But instead of a quiet respite from her controlling family, she finds her refuge occupied by the last man she ever wants to see again—an American artist, who’s also a thief.

And quite possibly one of her father’s spies.

This story includes a rebellious heroine, a determined spy, a meddling father, a vicious villain, a cast of free-thinking free-traders and possibly a ghost or two!

A Scandalous Widow Works her Wiles

Dear Reader,

The events of this Season have not disappointed! If you recall, the Teatime Tattler has previously reported on a young duke who caused a scene at Lady B’s recent ball.

Our latest news involves Lady B herself! The rumors of scandal touching her activities had quietened after Lord B’s death, but once again, the lady is stirring interest. Do read on:

Dear Mr. Clemens,

Just as the better families breathed a sigh of relief over the end of the sordid goings-on in one of the grandest homes in our generally respectable part of Hampshire, we are faced with more outrage.

Lady B, who disappeared for a time after the death of the earl (and a questionable death that was, even though our conscientious local magistrate did not wish to expose the area’s first family to further scandal) has reappeared at her late husband’s manor house, and this time in the company of the new Lord B!

You will know of course of the claims of a local marquess that the late earl changed his will to disinherit Lady B. Rumors abound that she somehow laid hands on and destroyed that new will.

The better families have tried to warn the new Lord B of her intrigues, but he is showing all the signs of having succumbed to her wiles. In fact, he is even claiming that whatever happens regarding her inheritance, she will continue to be under his protection.

The brazenness is confounding. I shall write again with more news soon.

Your faithful correspondent,

Mrs. J.

Her Impeccable Scoundrel

Anxious to save a cherished inheritance, Blythe Blatchfield, Countess of Chilcombe, knows she must repair her reputation with the Beau Monde in order to face the powerful marquess challenging her dissolute husband’s will. She vows to resist handsome rogues like her late husband, and to never again give her trust so blithely. But when the new earl, absent from England for many years, finally appears, new rumors swirl around Blythe. Facing the loss of everything, she finds herself needing the help of an old enemy, the man whose interference years earlier led to her unhappy marriage, the new Earl of Chilcombe.

Reluctantly returning to England from important duties abroad, diplomat Graeme Blatchfield has one bright hope: a chance to meet his late cousin’s widow again, to see if the rumors about the woman he once held a childish infatuation for are true. Having plunged into marriage with the last earl—Graeme’s fault for revealing their tryst in a vain attempt to rescue her—she’s been tainted by her husband’s decadent reputation. Rumors swirl in the men’s clubs about the new widow. Rumors that may or may not be true. Forced by matters of the estate to spend time together, he soon discovers the vulnerable and lonely woman underneath the society mask. Can he get her to forgive him—and more?

Will the Scandalous Countess be Evicted?

Dear Readers,

I’ve received the following report from one of my regular correspondents. What will the aristocracy get up to next?

Dear Mr. Clemens,

You will be well aware of the reappearance in town of the Earl of C’s scandalous widow, Lady C. The goings-on at the C’s country estate have been the talk of the town for years. Her disappearance for the last year has whetted all of our appetites for news, and I have made a special point of calling on her. For the good of society, you understand; Lady C was an upstart who trapped the late earl into marriage.

It is well known that upon her husband’s death, Lady C was left with very little, and even that might be a matter of the lady foisting a fraudulent will upon the court. The esteemed Lord D has filed a counterclaim, alleging that Lord C executed a new will shortly before his death, a new will that has disappeared.

That counterclaim hasn’t stopped the widow from living in Lord C’s homes and spending whatever money she can lay hands on while the heir’s return is delayed. Or, I should write, was delayed. For as it happens, I was privileged to be present when the late earl’s cousin walked through the door of Lady C’s drawing room. What surprise on his face! What consternation on hers!

I shall be certain to write again with more news soon.

Who Would Have Thought It?

Dear Readers,

I’ve shared this letter of 28 February with you before, but I am happy to tell you there is a sequel that sheds more light on this matter. I have, of course concealed the identity of the letters’ subjects, but you will perhaps recognized them anyway.

Without further ado:

28 February

My dear Harriet,

Is your cold better? You oughtn’t have gone to church in such rain. At our age, the Lord will see us soon enough, and it has caused you to miss the K ball! Such a crush it was. That dreadful Lord H was drug in by his uncle Lord G, all to meet the M girl. A fresh-faced one, she is, but it didn’t go well! Lud, I wish you had seen the rogue slink away.

And your late friend, A’s girl, L! Did you know she’s bringing out Miss M? Far too young for it, but no one asked me before they set her up in that merchant’s household. Yes and she was seen tête-à-tête in the garden with Lord G! What would A have said? Though one might ask her why she’d die and not leave the girl better-settled than to have to seek employment!

I’m sending a potion made up by Cook. Do try it. I don’t believe it will kill you as she doses the maid and the footman with it upon occasion.

As ever,

Gert

21 April

Dear Harriet,

You have retired to the country far too soon! You will never guess the news!

Did I not tell you that A’s girl, L was seen having a tête-à-tête in the garden with Lord G? Oh yes, and I must tell you… well, you will see the announcements soon. Not only has our Miss L found a much better match for the merchant’s girl after Lord H had the courtesy to put himself in the way of a cutthroat (you will have read of his demise). No, there is more!

L and Lord G have married. By special license, it is true, but in a most respectable way and even in the company of a marquess. Who would have thought it?

Mark my word, the new Lady G will be much in demand as a matchmaker next Season!

I am glad the worst of your cold has passed. Do have your cook make up the receipt I’ve enclosed. This elixir is a sure cure for your lingering cough.

Your friend as ever,

Gert

His Lordship Disappears with Two Ladies!

My dear Mr. Clemons,

What a delicious on dit I have for you!

Lord R, a most distinguished cavalry officer recently returned from Brussels after recovering from quite savage wounds in last summer’s battle, has disappeared. One might speculate that he has simply taken himself off to the country for a respite against this season’s matchmaking mamas, except that no such respite is needed. Lord R is completely unavailable to matchmakers, having been affianced for over a year to a duke’s granddaughter.

However… I have learned from my maid that Lord R attended a certain birthday party for a young Scottish lady, along with his fiancée and her grandfather the duke.

Lord R has not been seen since.

Nor has the fiancée, nor has the Scottish lady whose birthday was celebrated. It was noted that Lord R was seen in close conversation with the Scottish lady, an almost intimate tete-a-tete that sent eyebrows skyward, especially those of the duke.

What could have happened to Lord R and the young ladies? Is he in danger? One hopes his fiancée has not done him and her rival harm!

Claims of the Heart

Since a perilous fall, Lucie Macbeth has been seeing more than a settled future as the heiress to a Scottish barony. The visions plaguing her include a man—one far above her class and breeding, and English to boot. He’s engaged to a duke’s granddaughter as well, and thus wholly inappropriate. Though she can’t marry him, and she won’t become any man’s leman, when the Sight warns her of danger to him, her conscience, and her heart tell her she can’t walk away.

Since his return from Waterloo, Major Lord Rudgwick has been rusticating in the country teaching himself how to live as a man with only one hand and pondering how to end the engagement he contracted before his world turned upside down. But then a letter arrives from an old army comrade, requesting Rudgwick’s aid for his daughter, Lucie Macbeth, the woman he met one year earlier, the woman whose claims on his heart he can’t deny.
