It has come to the editor of this newspaper’s attention that a foul letter writer is killing the lady escorts of London.
A close source informs us that a fiendish, poisonous letter writer has been stalking the young women of our town, penning them crude notes, and then inviting them to meet, which inevitably ends in their gruesome and early death.
Thus far we are aware of five mistresses who find themselves at risk, but that is not to say they alone have escaped the letter writer’s attention. Whilst we would not be so forward as to state the obvious moral lesson, it would behoove young female readers to reconsider their tenuous circumstances if they find themselves in this sordid profession.
With one mistress missing, another dead, and more receiving letters of foul intent, who can say if the letter writer will be caught? Rumor has it that even Celeste Grey, the beautiful and feminine wit affectionately known as ‘the Grace’, has become involved in this mess. As her patron is rumored to be the honorable Lord Blackwood, it is clear this letter writer is sparing no one, high or low in their aim for trouble.
We have speculated on the identity of this writer and wonder, could it be a foul mistress, out to spite her fellows? A spurned lover or perhaps a scorned man out for revenge?
Should any readers have information that may be useful to this investigation, please write to the editor or speak with Constable Henry Dyngley.

But when her new employer is revealed to be a mistress, Poppy is at odds with herself. To ally herself with a woman of ill repute could damage her reputation, but to leave her employ would remove all chance of finding her mother.
Beatrice, Poppy’s new employer, needs more than companionship. Beatrice and her fellow mistresses have received threatening letters from an unknown person, with death as the end result. And with one mistress dead and another missing, these letters are no joke.
Poppy decides to stay, even if it means risking her reputation and consorting with pimps and prostitutes to find the truth. Poppy and her beloved constable, Henry Dyngley, must find the poisonous letter writer behind these attacks. But they also cannot ignore their growing feelings for each other, especially when Dyngley faces competition for Poppy’s affection.
Will Poppy find her mother? Will she and Dyngley track down the killer before another mistress dies? Will Poppy’s reputation be ruined for being a companion to a mistress? Ultimately Poppy must decide, is it worth a ruined reputation if it means finding the mother she never knew?
